An influential arts charity that told bookshops not to sell titles written by gender-critical authors has secured fresh public funding despite facing the prospect of being wound up.
Creative Scotland has awarded a grant worth more than £64,300 to Literature Alliance Scotland (LAS).
Scotland’s largest literary network was thrown into turmoil after a statement was posted on its website claiming “Terfs” (trans-exclusionary radical feminists) — a derogatory term for people who do not believe that trans women are women — were in league with fascists and called on venues not to offer them a public platform.

It provoked an angry backlash from campaign groups, including For Women Scotland, a women’s rights group, which said: “What will be next? Book burnings? This is madness.”
LAS’s chairwoman, vice-chairwoman and several board members resigned after accepting full responsibility for a “lack of oversight” in allowing a briefing document that called for a ban on “Terf books” to be published on its website — despite insisting that it had been posted in error.
Those who have left the LAS include Sarah Mason, its chairwoman, and its interim vice-chairwoman, Ali Bowden, who is also the director of Edinburgh Unesco City of Literature Trust.
Formed in 2015, LAS claims to be a “trusted, strong, collective voice” that brings together writers, publishers, educators, librarians, literature organisations and national cultural bodies.

Jenny Lindsay, the poet, author and performer, who claims that she lost work after expressing gender-critical views, said that she was saddened by the latest developments.
“Like many others, I am simply unsure what LAS is for,” she told The Times. “I was deeply troubled — and, yes, hurt — by the recent stooshie over the publication of the anti-feminist ‘guidance’ that stipulated such women’s books should not be stocked in stores, advising too that such women (women like me, in other words) should be discriminated against.
“There has simply not been any kind of concerted effort by the most powerful organisations to challenge the censoriousness and culture of fear that many writers are living in. Indeed, some have made it very much worse.”
Lindsay added: “Writers who have challenged this atmosphere continue to be treated and responded to as if their highlighting the issues is the problem, while those causing the atmosphere continue to be rewarded.”
The guidance published on its site this year was written for LAS by Eris Young, a “queer, transgender writer of speculative fiction and non-fiction”. It was removed from the alliance website in May after details emerged online.
Last month LAS wrote to its members announcing that an extraordinary meeting would take place on August 16 to decide “whether, or not, LAS should continue as a representative organisation”.
It stated: “Due to the nature of some of the advice in the document it was eventually removed, but not before it was picked up and reported on in the papers and on social media.
“The LAS board had not seen the document prior to it being published on the LAS website and it was posted without our approval. An investigation into the publishing approval processes that led to this situation revealed a lack of oversight required by the board, for which we take full responsibility.”
The Harry Potter author JK Rowling has repeatedly been labelled a Terf by trans activists because of her views, although she rejects the characterisation.
Creative Scotland said: “LAS received £64,344 in the latest round of Open Fund awards for ‘Creating a Fairer Sector’, a project supporting Scottish writers and the literature workforce.”
